New Recipe for Dessert

Photo from Crave Online
I sauteed black cherries, brown sugar, half cup water until reduced. Then added a quarter cup blackberry brandy. Then sliced up three large nectarines into a deep dish pan wth cherries poured over. Added splash of lemon and vanilla. Topped with leftover half roll of sugar cookie mix smashed into small drops to cover. Finish with a sprinkle of cinnamon and pinch of nutmeg. Bake 350 degrees for about 30 minutes.

Glass Created with Layers, Photo Screen Printing and Brushed Frit...

This June, the FSU Master Craftsman Studio folks hosted Glass Fusing Techniques with a wonderful artist,
Leslie Nolan enlightening us on the possibilities. These are examples of using glass bases with the intention to blend, print, move with paintbrush all kinds of frit glass of varying particle sizes. All of this variation creates surprises every time the kiln reveals the works.

This 4 x 4 inch example is in two layers with a process of printing dry frit through a custom made photo exposed silkscreen then adding loose frit to the top clear piece and moving the loose frit(size of fine beach sand) around to produce textures. I ws trying to get the loose idea of water or old cyanotype colors.

For this white base I dusted loose frit through a distorted piece of burlap for the netting pattern, added clear glass and applied scraps, stringers, and larger coarse frit.

Posted by Picasa This Schnauzer dog is inspired by Murphy. I simply moved the loose frit around the glass base until it shaped up to a very painterly illustrated dog and added the specks, stringers, and confetti triangles to resemble the sometimes delicious bits of things he finds very irrestistable. I found this technique to be so simple, yet requiring persistent patience and experimentation with tools like a needle pointed mini awl, toothpicks, and varying dry paintbrushes.

Class with Leslie Nolan,Fused Glass-Painting with Frit

Goldfish, screened pattern base and fish for the top layer with scrap Bullseye color and bits of orange stringers.

First day using a little of everything-frit( periwinkle), stringers (thin lines), and scrap bullseye in orange and irridescent on one clear glass base.

My example of wafers ( berries and holly leaf) add to base for second firing with confetti glass that melted more like wet tissue than the original hard edged form.

Experimented with mixing liquid and black frit to apply from a squeez bottle for dots and linear design. I also cut paper stencils for the silhouette and used a strainer to dust frit for airbrushed look. Look closely for bubbles possibly caused by the liquid trapped between the two layers of glass.

Hats Off to Our Military-Independence Day 2009

Hats off to all of the people with strong determination to pursue freedom, protect rights of the individual and push ahead in their own quest to discover their potential within this great country. Fireworks are fine, but I prefer the fireflies with their spontaneous flight paths throught the pines and on and off and on again light show that lasts all summer long.

Recognizing Creativity for an Unpredictable Future

Sir Ken Robinson makes an entertaining and profoundly moving case for creating an education system that nurtures (rather than undermines) creativity.
